Grant to Further Contributions to Open Source Software
Matt Haberland, professor in the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department, was awarded a $325,000 grant in partnership with the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) to improve SciPy (short for Scientific Python) which is an open-source Python library used to help find solutions for complex mathematical or scientific problems. The programming is often used by the biomedical research community and astrophysicists. Haberland will work with Chan-Zuckerberg’s Essential Open Source Software for Science (EOSS) program. The grant will support contributions to the SciPy library by Haberland and Cal Poly students. Eventually, the resulting work may be used by Cal Poly faculty in solving mathematical problems that they may encounter. Read more about the grant here.
