Horticulture Greenhouse Complex Dedication

Please join the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences to celebrate the dedication of the Howard C. Brown Horticulture Greenhouse Complex at 1 p.m. on March 21 at the Cal Poly Environmental Horticulture Science Unit, Bldg. 48.

The enhanced 18,000-square-foot ornamental horticulture facility is being named in honor of Dean Emeritus Howard Brown (Ornamental Horticulture, ’43). Brown served at Cal Poly for more than 40 years, growing the ornamental horticulture program exponentially.

Alumnus and longtime dean’s advisory council member, Charles Walton (Ornamental Horticulture, ’66), donated more than $1 million to update and modernize the complex, asking that it be named in Brown’s honor.

“Howard Brown was a bigger-than-life individual. I cannot imagine anyone else’s name that should be on the building than his,” said Walton. “There are few times in life that you can do something for someone who has meant so much to you, and this is that opportunity.”

Fresh Tracks: First Genration Student Panel

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the annual Fresh Tracks event, featuring a panel of four first-generation students who will share their personal stories of navigating the college experience and offer advice for all students. The event will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, from 11 a.m. to noon in 181-205.

Fresh Tracks is organized by the CAFES Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee as part of the college’s DEI Strategic Action Plan goal to create, retain, and sustain a more diverse community of students, staff and faculty that reflects and serves the diverse people of California.

World Ag Expo

The college will host an informational booth staffed by CAFES Ambassadors at the World Ag Expo in Tulare from Feb. 11-13. World Ag Expo is the largest annual outdoor agricultural exposition with over 1,200 exhibitors and an attendance of more than 100,000 each year. It is held at the International Agri-Center in Tulare. The college is also hosting an alumni and friends reception at the World Ag Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres, Cal Poly wine and beer from Cal Poly alumni owned Dust Bowl Brewing will be served. Poinsettia Sale This Saturday

The final day of Cal Poly’s annual poinsettia sale, with thousands of plants and dozens of varieties and colors, will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Poly Plant Shop.

The flowering holiday plants are grown by students working at Cal Poly’s horticulture unit, gaining hands-on experience cultivating specialty crops and learning how environmental concerns impact the crop on a day-to-day basis.

Fourth-year plant sciences major Sabrina Correa has helped to cultivate this year’s poinsettia crop.“ This practical engagement has deepened my understanding of the complexities of greenhouse management, from controlling environmental factors to ensuring plant health and quality,” she said. “Beyond the technical expertise, this has positively impacted my confidence and reinforces my passion for my field.”

This year’s poinsettia crop offers a myriad of colors. Sizes range from small plants in 4-inch pots to large poinsettias reaching 3 feet high, in 10-inch pots. Prices range from $10 to $50.

In addition to poinsettias, the Poly Plant Holiday Sale will also feature student-made products such as the newly bottled Cal Poly olive oil, jams, honey and chocolate.

The Poly Plant Shop is located on campus off Via Carta Road. Take the Highland Drive entrance, turn left on Via Carta Road and go to the top of the hill. For more information, call the Poly Plant Shop at 805-756-1106.

Aspire to Grow Conference on Feb. 5

The seventh-annual Aspire to Grow Conference explores innovation in the food, agriculture and natural resource sectors. The symposium will focus on the role diversity of thought and experience plays in achieving this. The conference will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the JUSTIN and J. LOHR Center for Wine and Viticulture (Bldg. 156). Student committee chairs Averie Konefat, agricultural science major and Angeli Morales, agricultural science major are organizing the event.

Plant Sciences Professor Retires

Plant Sciences Professor David Headrick is retiring after 27 years of teaching at Cal Poly. Join the Plant Sciences Department in celebrating his tenure and wishing him farewell on Saturday, Dec. 7. A cocktail hour will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner and an open mic. Bring your stories and fondest memories to share. RSVP by Friday, Nov. 29. You can also submit a message on a kudos board to that will be shared with him.

One Health Informational Meeting Friday

If you are a staff or faculty member interested in the intersection of human, animal and environmental health, please join a group of leading faculty on Friday, Nov. 1, from 1:10-2 p.m. in 10-241 for an informational and planning meeting about developing a One Health academic program at Cal Poly.

“One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach — working at the local, regional, national, and global levels — with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment (CDC).”

Academic opportunities in One Health will allow students to develop cross-disciplinary skills and pursue unique research collaborations while addressing urgent contemporary issues such as climate change, public health, zoonotic diseases, vector-borne diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety and food security and environmental contamination.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Save the date: The Charles and Claire Jacobson Animal Health Center groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 8. A reception will be held at 2 p.m., followed by the groundbreaking ceremony at 2:30 p.m. RVSP here.

The Charles and Claire Jacobson Animal Health Center is set to become an interactive, experiential animal facility that embraces hands-on, Learn by Doing, supporting the next generation of leaders in veterinary medicine, animal healthcare and animal agriculture. This building will reinforce teaching, research, and clinical training for animal science students in a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will meeting the growing demand for animal health and science professionals. Fall Student Welcome

The CAFES Ambassadors helped greet more than 1,200 new students and welcome them to the college at the annual Fall Welcome event held Sept. 19 at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center.
