The Cal Poly Logging Team recently hosted its annual timbersports competition, Cal Conclave, with Cal Poly, Humboldt and University of California, Berkeley in attendance. With a large turnout of spectators and alumni volunteers, the Mustangs offered events including climbing, single buck, power saw, obstacle pole, double buck, axe throw, chopping and more.

Plant Sciences Professor David Headrick is retiring after 27 years of teaching at Cal Poly. Join the Plant Sciences Department in celebrating his tenure and wishing him farewell on Saturday, Dec. 7. A cocktail hour will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner and an open mic. Bring your stories and fondest memories to share. RSVP by Friday, Nov. 29. If you are a staff or faculty member interested in the intersection of human, animal and environmental health, please join a group of leading faculty on Friday, Nov. 1, from 1:10-2 p.m. in 10-241 for an informational and planning meeting about developing a One Health academic program at Cal Poly.
“One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach — working at the local, regional, national, and global levels — with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment (CDC).”
Academic opportunities in One Health will allow students to develop cross-disciplinary skills and pursue unique research collaborations while addressing urgent contemporary issues such as climate change, public health, zoonotic diseases, vector-borne diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety and food security and environmental contamination.

Save the date: The Charles and Claire Jacobson Animal Health Center groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 8. A reception will be held at 2 p.m., followed by the groundbreaking ceremony at 2:30 p.m. RVSP here.
The Charles and Claire Jacobson Animal Health Center is set to become an interactive, experiential animal facility that embraces hands-on, Learn by Doing, supporting the next generation of leaders in veterinary medicine, animal healthcare and animal agriculture. This building will reinforce teaching, research, and clinical training for animal science students in a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will meeting the growing demand for animal health and science professionals. The Cal Poly Wildland-Urban Interface FIRE Institute is hosting a free screening of the award-winning documentary “Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire,” at the Spanos Theatre on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. A Q&A panel, including executive producer of the film Ralph Bloemers and WUI Director Frank Frievalt, will be held after the screening. Film Synopsis: “Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire” takes viewers on a journey with the top experts in the nation to better understand fire. The film follows the harrowing escape from Paradise as the town ignited from wind-driven embers and burned within a few hours of the fire’s start. Filmmakers also visit fire labs where researchers torch entire houses to learn why some homes burn and others survive, learn from Native Americans as they employ fire to benefit nature and increase community safety as they have for thousands of years and follow researchers who work to understand the effects of climate on forests and the crucial role that natural forests play in storing vast amounts of carbon. Along the way, people who have survived the deadliest fires to underscore the importance of the quest.

Join us on Oct. 26 as we celebrate the arrival of fall and unveil some of the latest improvements at Cal Poly’s Leaning Pine Arboretum. The free community event, organized by Wendy Robinson in the Plant Sciences Department, will honor emeritus professor and previous arboretum director Tom Eltzroth. Guests are invited to join a walking tour of the arboretum at 2 p.m., followed by a free barbecue dinner at 4 p.m. The event will culminate with live music from Jill Knight, accompanied by Jeri Jones, Pam Delgado and Rob Strum, and the Bogeys. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend the annual Coffee with the College event held during Mustang Family Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon in the courtyard outside of Building 11. Join parents, supporters and students and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences’ leadership team and academic advisors as we share more about our programs, student support services and opportunities to get involved. The event is an opportunity for prospective students to learn more about the campus, our hands-on programs, and the career opportunities that the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences prepares them for.

Help us recognize the legacy of agriculture at Cal Poly and in the surrounding community by celebrating those that teach, learn, work in and support agriculture.
