The college and the Wine and Viticulture Department hosted a booth at Unified Wine and Grape Symposium, an industry-wide trades show and program, in Sacramento on Jan. 24-26. An Alumni and Friends Reception was held Jan. 25 to share the latest developments in the department and the JUSTIN and J. LOHR Center for Wine and Viticulture.

The third-annual Fresh Tracks: First Generation Panel + Discussion featured four CAFES students who identify as first-generation college students. The panel of students from the Animal Science and the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Departments included Diego Ortega, Maya Tjan, Yuliana Guadalupe Hernandez and Vanessa Cervantes. They shared their personal stories of navigating the college experience and offered thoughtful advice for all students. Assistant Professor Moses Mike moderated the event, which was organized by the CAFES Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee as part of the college’s DEI Strategic Action Plan goal to create, retain, and sustain a more diverse community of students, staff and faculty that reflects and serves the diverse people of California.

The college will host an informational booth staffed by CAFES Ambassadors at the World Ag Expo in Tulare from Feb. 14-16. World Ag Expo is the largest annual outdoor agricultural exposition with over 1,200 exhibitors and an attendance of more than 100,000 each year. It is held at the International Agri-Center in Tulare. The college and Cal Poly Alumni are also hosting an alumni and friends reception at the World Ag Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres, Cal Poly wine and beer from Cal Poly alumni owned Dust Bowl Brewing will be served. The fifth annual Aspire to Grow Conference will be held Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the JUSTIN and J. LOHR Center for Wine and Viticulture, followed by a networking social. The conference, planned by students, explores innovation in the food, agriculture and natural resource sectors. The symposium will focus on the theme of perseverance, and the role diversity of thought and experience play in achieving this. Hear from speakers across a variety of industries. The fall quarter’s CAFES Research Seminar Series offers an array of different topics. Make sure and take advantage of this opportunity to expand your knowledge. All presentations are held Fridays from 12:10-1:00 p.m., via Zoom. The first one is slated for Friday, Sept. 23, with Assistant Professor Charlotte Decock, who is presenting on “Defining Soil Health in the Context of Organic Cropping Systems.” Thanks to Assistant Professor Shashika Hewavitharana for organizing a great seminar series this quarter!

2 p.m. Emcee Keith Humphrey will begin the program at 2:30 p.m., which includes a keynote from President Armstrong as well as remarks from the ASI President, California Faculty Association (CFA) President, California State Universities Employees Union (CSUEU) President, and the Academic Senate Chair. The annual Cal Poly Performance Horse Sale will be held June 17-18, with a meet and greet planned for Friday, June 17 and the sale on Saturday, June 18 at the Oppenheimer Family Equine Center.
Cal Poly’s Quarter Horse Enterprise is the ultimate Learn by Doing experience. Students are selected to participate in the program based on their work ethic, riding and training abilities. They gain valuable hands-on experience starting and preparing Cal Poly horses over the course of winter and spring quarters, working with some of the leading trainers in the reined cow horse and performance horse industries. The result is an annual sale that showcases the versatility, temperament and talent of these horses and celebrates our students’ achievements
