Summer 2025 Program in Costa Rica

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Professor Nicholas Babin is leading an eight-week, 12-unit study abroad program in the summer of 2025 to Costa Rica. The application opens Dec. 1. Check out the upcoming info sessions to learn more:

Livestock Judging Team at Cow Palace

The Cal Poly Livestock Judging Team recently competed at Cow Palace in Daly City, California placing as the second overall high team and second for reasons. The 2024-25 team members include Savanna Barcellos (fourth in sheep, fourth in swine, fifth overall), Ty Gamble (eighth overall), Bryce Eames (tenth overall), Maddy Cameron and Grace Peek. The team is coached by Morgan Wonderly.

Cal Poly at the Global Produce and Floral Show

The Agribusiness and Agricultural Education and Communication Departments traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the Global Produce and Floral Show hosted by the International Fresh Produce Association. Students participated in the Pack Family Career Pathways program which included mentorship, programming by the produce and floral industries. “It is a good opportunity for students to see a different part of agriculture, make industry connections and get acclimated into the industry,” said Professor James Bingaman.

CAFES Connections: Fall Career Networking Event

The CAFES Connections: Fall Career Networking Event, planned for Nov. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Swanson Center of Effort Conference Hall, is a perfect opportunity for students to meet and network with companies interested in connecting with the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences students. Students can attend this event to network and learn about full-time career, co-op, or internship opportunities, and come prepared for same-day or next-day interviews. Business attire is suggested. Baker/Koob Endowment Application Now Open

The application window for the 2024-25 Baker and Koob Endowments is now open. These grants support hands-on, project-based learning for Cal Poly students, funding travel, research, competitions, and more. Open to all majors, the endowments encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration. Eligible undergraduate and graduate students must apply by Thursday, Nov. 14. Fall Student Welcome

The CAFES Ambassadors helped greet more than 1,200 new students and welcome them to the college at the annual Fall Welcome event held Sept. 19 at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center.

CAFES SURP Poster Symposium

Each year, the college sponsors a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) to provide students the opportunity to experience undergraduate research projects on topics related to their programs or in which they have interest. Students work closely with faculty research leads and receive a stipend. The program is open to all students in the college.

Students participating in the 2024 program presented their research at a poster session Aug. 29 at the JUSTIN and J. LOHR Center for Wine and Viticulture. More than 34 students participated in projects alongside faculty across multiple disciplines in the college’s nine departments.

American Society of Animal Science

Graduate students Jason Dubowsky and Amelia Katz, advised by Associate Professor Julie Huzzey and Assistant Professor Zach McFarlane presented their research at the American Society of Animal Science annual conference in Calgary, Alberts, Canada in July. Dubowsky presented his work assessing beef cow grazing behavior during the breeding season using GPS collars at Cal Poly’s Escuela Ranch. Katz presented her research analyzing beef bull feeding behaviors and their relationship to feed efficiency at the Cal Poly Bull Test Program.

STUDENT CAREER COUNSELING

CAFES faculty, departments and student organizations can request a presentation with Monica Contreras-Suarez, who begins as the CAFES Career Counselor on Sept 3. To do so, use the workshop request form. Faculty can also request to embed Canvas Career Education modules into their curriculum.

First-time first-year students will continue to meet with the Freshman Focus Team. Students who are second year and above, including new transfers, will meet with Contreras-Suarez and schedule appointments through MustangJobs.
