EcoFarm and Wild Farm Alliance are hosting a conference on practical whole farm solutions for pest control advisers and growers on Jan. 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California. Cal Poly faculty, including Matthew Grieshop, will present their research. The conference addresses soil health and habitat diversity on the farm and will cover techniques on how to reduce the use of pesticides and come into compliance with California’s pesticide reduction strategy. This event is approved for 6 DPR CE credits and 7 CCA credits. Registration is $99 with lunch included.

Midland School, a co-educational boarding school for high school students in Los Olivos, California, is seeking to fill its farm faculty assistant position. Midland School operates a 10-acre certified organic farm and a 1.5 acre orchard. Beginning salary is $40,000 and the expected start date is late June. Preparations for the 32nd CAFES Open House on April 10-12 are underway and student volunteers are needed for a various planning committees. Upcoming planning meetings are at 7: 10 a.m. on Wednesdays; Jan. 22, Feb.18 and March 19 are on Zoom, and Feb. 5, March 5, April 2 and April 9 are in person in room 10-206. Welcome prospective students and parents at this hallmark event of the university.

The Multicultural Agriculture Program (MAP) aims to foster student academic success and community engagement via resources meant to support historically marginalized and underrepresented students of diverse backgrounds and talents. After being closed for two years, the MAP began its relaunch during the Fall 2024 quarter with events that facilitate academic, career, and social participation.
Students can use the space to study, rest between classes, connect with other students and faculty, and enjoy some light refreshments. The MAP has been a presence in CAFES for nearly three decades, and is currently open 10 hours a week in building 10-202 with plans to extend hours of operation moving towards Winter and Spring 2025.

We’re excited for our annual CAFES Holiday Open House on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Swanson Center of Effort Conference Hall, and hope you’ll join in the fun! Family and loved ones are welcome to attend; childcare will be available.

Events
The final day of Cal Poly’s annual poinsettia sale, with thousands of plants and dozens of varieties and colors, will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Poly Plant Shop.
The flowering holiday plants are grown by students working at Cal Poly’s horticulture unit, gaining hands-on experience cultivating specialty crops and learning how environmental concerns impact the crop on a day-to-day basis.
Fourth-year plant sciences major Sabrina Correa has helped to cultivate this year’s poinsettia crop.“ This practical engagement has deepened my understanding of the complexities of greenhouse management, from controlling environmental factors to ensuring plant health and quality,” she said. “Beyond the technical expertise, this has positively impacted my confidence and reinforces my passion for my field.”
This year’s poinsettia crop offers a myriad of colors. Sizes range from small plants in 4-inch pots to large poinsettias reaching 3 feet high, in 10-inch pots. Prices range from $10 to $50.
In addition to poinsettias, the Poly Plant Holiday Sale will also feature student-made products such as the newly bottled Cal Poly olive oil, jams, honey and chocolate.
