College National Finals Rodeo

Eleven members of Cal Poly’s Rodeo Team qualified to compete in the 72nd annual College National Finals Rodeo held June 11-19 in Casper, Wyoming, where one student-athlete came away with a second-place win: Grant Peterson, a second-year agricultural systems management major, placed second in the steer wrestling event. Student-athletes who advanced to the finals are: Grant Peterson of Livermore, California and regional champion Ethan Usher of Santa Ynez, California, in steer wrestling; Maggie Usher of Santa Ynez, California, and Hannah Steagall of Sanger, California, in goat tying; Karson Mebane of Bakersfield, California and Quintin McWhorter of San Luis Obispo in saddle bronc riding; Cole Tart of San Luis Obispo in bareback riding; Kathryn Varian of Parkfield, California and Kelsey Cadwell of Oakdale, California, in barrel racing; Jason Andersen of Salinas, California, in tie-down roping; and Tyree Cochrane of San Luis Obispo in team roping.

Animal Science Students Commemorate World Turtle and Tortoise Day

Animal Science undergraduates observed World Turtle and Tortoise Day on May 24 with a live-streamed webinar to inspire California elementary school children about the importance of turtle and tortoise conservation. These students, who provide daily care and husbandry for the on-campus colony of seventeen leopard tortoises, worked collaboratively to create an entertaining lesson introducing young children to these incredible animals, discussed careers supporting wildlife, and shared the hands-on experiences available to all Cal Poly students. This event is part of an on-going educational outreach effort highlighting topics with California school-aged children. The Animal Science Department’s Reptile Husbandry Enterprise is a one-of-a-kind student opportunity to gain hands-on experience with non-domestic animal husbandry and research. Alumni from this academic program currently serve in career positions of animal care, management and conservation in zoos, aquariums, and allied industries across the United States.

Cal Poly Veterinary Community Service Enterprise Receives Award

The Cal Poly Veterinary Community Service Enterprise and Animal Science Lecturer Jennifer Staniec were selected to receive the Outstanding Campus-Community Collaboration award as part of the 35^th annual Cal Poly Community Service Awards. The award honors Staniec’s role in the Cal Poly Veterinary Community Service Enterprise, a student-run volunteer program that provides veterinary care to pets of the homeless. The enterprise provides Cal Poly students with an opportunity to serve in San Luis Obispo and have a lasting impact on a broad community population through their volunteer service.

CAFES Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Action Plan Survey

As part of inclusive excellence at Cal Poly, the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As such, the CAFES DEI committee would value your input on the CAFES Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Action Plan. The CAFES DEI committee created a survey through the Winter quarter and has also been holding listening sessions with small groups. The survey should take no more than five minutes and will help the committee construct a stronger strategic action plan for the college. The summer will be spent assessing the survey results, and a finalized draft plan will be shared at the annual Fall Conference session in September. Strawberry Center Field Day

The Cal Poly Strawberry Center’s staff and students are busy preparing for the next Field Day, which will be held on July 29. The annual Strawberry Center Field Day will return to an in-person event on campus this year, adhering to all county and state health and safety guidelines in place at that time. Faculty, staff and students will share the center’s latest research and happenings at the annual event.

Performance Horse Sale

The 2021 Cal Poly Performance Horse Sale will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Oppenheimer Family Equine Center. A preview will be held Friday, June 18, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Cal Poly’s Quarter Horse Enterprise project is a program comprised of well-qualified student riders who are selected to start and train Cal Poly bred Quarter Horses. Each year, these horses are sold at the Cal Poly Performance Horse Sale after at least five months of training. The two-year-old horses are trained entirely by students and are geared towards performance, general riding and ranch work. The goal of the program is to produce a versatile and quiet horse, as well as well-rounded, hardworking and knowledgeable student riders with training experience. The Quarter Horse Enterprise, under the supervision of instructor Lou Moore-Jacobsen, is a unique opportunity that truly embodies the university’s Learn by Doing philosophy. Street Food Demonstration

Associate Professor Samir Amin’s FSN 304 Advanced Culinary Principles and Practices class was asked to prepare four different street food dishes that could be served in Vista Grande. The students prepared and presented their dishes to Jess Dozier, director of Campus Dining, Russell Monteath, assistant director of Campus Dining and Chef Chris Dunham, executive chef of Campus Dining.

The students prepared a tasty selection of choices including Pani Puri, a crispy bite-sized puffed dough pocket filled with potatoes, chickpeas, red onion, cilantro, seasoned with chaat masala, and Mul Naengmyeon, a cold noodle soup in a savory vegetable broth with topped with julienned cucumber, sliced chilled tri-tip, or marinated mushrooms, accompanied with sweet and spicy pickled daikon radish, a soy-marinated egg, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a nutty crunch. Both dishes were served at Vista Grande on May 27.
